MAPPING PROJECT:
SKY PARCELS PROJECT
In the Sky Parcels project, one considers what one gives up in coming to a dense urban environment. This project is part aspirational in wondering how might one import their vista aesthetic common to one community to another unfamiliar terrain. This project is both a mapping essay, collecting and evaluating parcels of light, and a consideration of how the sky and sunlight are important to a sense of self and well-being.
The data was gathered through a series of wanderings and site visits. The samples were photographed from the ground looking up. A simple grid was then overlaid, flattening the image so one could compare samples. From there, one can reaffirm or reveal new areas abundant in light.
My role was to conceive and design a system in which the dense urban environment of Manhattan might be interpreted and mediated in a new way. Using mobile technology and the landscape of the city, I aimed to engage mapping in a new way.
